5 out of 5 stars Great Pitching Machine, Great Value   April 14, 2010

From SKLZ: The Lightning Bolt baseball pitching machine forces hitters to intently focus on making contact with the soft micro balls. Using a smaller micro ball increases a batter's visual acuity and makes it much easier when hitting full size balls. Lightweight and portable, players can take practice inside or out to improve their visual acuity and hand-eye coordination. The battery-operated machine holds up to 50 balls at a time, and automatically pitches every 5 seconds at 30mph with realistic flight up to 25 feet. 30 MPH with a semi-random pitch around the strike zone every time with a small target ball makes for great hitters and a great product. As you get better, move a couple feet closer to the machine to decrease reaction time to the pitch and increase your bat speed.

Makes for GREAT catcher practice too. Set up your catching stance and use either a glove or bare hands to practice acuity catching. Move closer to the machine for shorter reaction times as you get better. Make sure you add the Bolt Ball Bucket SKLZ Bolt Balls (50 pk) to your cart too!

4 out of 5 stars Better quality than expected - purchased despite the several bad reviews   July 26, 2010

I was very reluctant to purchase this pitching machine due to the numerous bad reviews I've read on multiple sites, but gave it a chance due to affordability and the Sklz name. So far so good after a little over a month of use. The machine is used by my son who is a first year 10 year old Babe Ruth league player. He was middle of the road average with his batting skills and wanted to be better. I would pitch to Jim, but was never a great pitcher and couldn't consistently practice with him because of my schedule. With this machine he is able to set it up himself and practice over & over. His hand eye coordination/batting skills have rapidly improved in a very short amount of time. He 99% of the time sets it up inside (for us it worked well for the machine to be at the end of the hall pitching to Jim in his bedroom. He lost fewer balls that way, but if you have a large living room, that would work just as well.) I've read complaints about the feeder jamming but we've found this to only be a problem if you overload the bucket... About 35-40 balls seems to be perfect. Buy some extra because you will lose a few.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect   July 27, 2010
My Haven of Life
I am a baseball coach and wanted to use the SKLZ pitching machine to help with hitting drills when I am the only coach out on the field. You can load up around 20 balls in the bucket and just let it go for the players to hit off of. The only problem I have is that it is not consistant. I found I needed someone to hold the machine still when running, or it would shift slightly on each pitch. Also after some time you had to adjust the settings as they seemed to move every now and then. Not always, but sometimes.
Since it uses the small golf size foam balls I knew the pitch would move a little, but occassionally it curved or moved so much it was unhittable.

When used indoors (garage, gym, etc) then it seems to work much better.

I give this product three stars because it is not perfect by any means, but it does get the job done if you have someone behind it working the settings or if you use it indoors. But don't expect to get much out of it if you are by yourself working on your swing.

2 out of 5 stars Ok for the money   March 15, 2010

The product is ok for the money. It runs on C batteries, which can get expensive if you use it regularly. It is not very accurate and there is no strike zone. This can actually be a benefit because you can teach your child not to swing at bad pitches. The balls are really light and soft, so the balls that end up hitting your child won't hurt, or bruise them. Because the balls are light, any amount of wind greatly affects the flight of the ball. This product cannot be used if there is any wind. The durability of the product is pretty weak, I have had mine for approximately a month (using it about 2-3x a week for 10-15min) and the feeding mechanism has already malfunctioned. The electric ball circulation mechanism in the feeder is no longer working at all. The way I get the machine to work is by inserting one ball at a time and pushing it through the tube. If I had known it was not durable I probably wouldn't have purchased it. However, I may have just had the one bad machine in the batch. If the machines were reliable and durable for $50 you can't beat it. I will be satisfied if the machine lasts another 2 months until my son's season is over. Bottom line, real pitching machines cost $300 and up, for $50 you can't beat it.
